No single roofing type is best in all conditions.
The roof you choose depends very much on your style of home and it’s location. A couple of things to consider before selecting a roof that is BEST for your New England home:
- What type of roof do you currently have protecting your home?
- If you have an asphalt shingle roof or a wood shake roof, you will need to install a product that similar in weight and won’t exceed your roof frame limits. If you have a standard weight tile, you can install almost any product because your home’s original frame was designed to handle the load of 10 lbs per sq ft.
- What is your neighborhood’s overall style?
- Your neighborhood will tell you a lot about the type of roof you can install. For example, if you live in a homeowners association, you will most likely have to stick with their recommendations. If you live in a predominately metal roof neighborhood, a metal roof might make the most sense. If you notice a good mix, then it really is your call.
- How much of your roof is visible?
- The look of your roof can have a tremendous impact on the curb appeal and thus, the value of your home. If your roof is extremely visible, it makes sense to lean towards a higher-end product. If, however, you have a gable roof and can hardly see your roof, there is no real need to spend extra money on a luxury product you can’t see.
When adding a new roof to your home, this is an opportunity to upgrade your home in terms of look, style and color.
There are a multitude of roof types available for installation in New England.
Here in New England we tend to lean toward the traditional asphalt, composite slate, and metal roof as our roofing preference.
Asphalt (or composite) Shingles: can be used on any style home, even those with a steep-pitched roof. An estimated 80% of all American houses are built with asphalt roof shingles because of their performance, and great pricing.
Composite Slate Tile: has always been the fashion with the wealthy neighborhoods of New England. Consumers tend to appreciate its smooth texture, solid appearance and long lasting color. However, composite slate is a more costly. The weight of a composite slate tile roof may also require structural reinforcement within the roof.
Metal Roofs: are becoming the latest trend. For starters, the metal roof can be made to look like almost any traditional roofing material. Metal roofs are also much more durable and longer lasting while requiring little to no upkeep. Metal roofs are also energy efficient and can keep attics from overheating as they deflect the rays of the sun away from the home.
Environmentally friendly, extremely lightweight, and constructed of post-consumer recycled materials, the metal roof trend is for good reason. Installation is easy, since it can be installed over your existing roof.
