Almar LLC over the years has done a number of different projects at the Longfellow House-Washington’s Headquarters National Historic Site. Most recently, it took on the exterior painting, which included lead-based paint remediation. The exterior clapboards, decks, chimneys, dormers, balusters, and widows walk were all stripped, prepped, and given a fresh coat of paint.
Working on historic sites requires a higher level of detail and care than most projects. Colors must be matched to historic tones, and properly prepping aged building components takes a little extra time. The methods used must often match the methods that were used historically. For example a brush might be used instead of new spray equipment. While the methods might be historic, safety measures and building codes are always followed to today’s standards.
Previously we have also performed detailed carpentry including the replacement of railing, balusters, columns, and crown pieces. If you have a chance, take a walk through the gardens or visit the site during its operating hours to be a part of the history yourself.
