The Importance of Preparing Your Roof for Fall and Winter

It is nearly impossible to believe, but Summer 2020 is almost behind us. At AlmarLLC, we understand that we tend to overlook our roofs, during the warm summer days. The lure of visiting friends and families, going on a summer break. relaxing in our back yards, coupled with the unbearable temperatures we have had, the time for inspecting our rooftops is just never quite right. With the onset of school and new COVID19 lifestyle, schedules seem even more hectic and cleaning your roof has basically become a low priority. Like all other parts of our homes, the roof does require regular inspections and ongoing maintenance to ensure it’s ability to withstand the rough weather of the impending cold months and operate optimally to save in heating costs.

We thought we would offer up these FIVE steps to keep the temperature of your home UP throughout the winter months, while keeping the costs DOWN.

Clean Debris off Your Rooftop

The roof is exposed to dirt and debris all year round. As months go by, your roof accumulates debris in the form of loose branches, twigs, grass, fallen leaves, dirt, and even possibly flying trash. If left on top of the roof throughout the fall and winter season, this debris will start collecting moisture and over time, will put your house at risk for mold and algae growth and rotting. To clean up the debris, safely use a ladder to climb up the roof and use a broom or an air blower.

Clean Out Your Gutters

Leaves and grass shavings typically accumulate in your gutters, causing the most vital path for your roof to safely drain to become clogged. Failure to remove leaves and debris from your gutters will result in clogs in the downspouts, which eventually causes the rainwater to overflow your roof. When water overflow occurs on your roof, the water escapes under your shingles causing moister damage. The extra weight from the wet leaves and built up debris can also damage your gutters by bending them. It is extremely important to make the time to clean out your gutters.

Check Your Attic for Proper Air Flow

Proper ventilation in the attic plays a crucial role in keeping your roof in it’s best condition. Poor ventilation could shorten the life of the roof. Your rooftop is literally being cooked from the inside and outside if you do not have proper ventilation. Check your attic insulation and replace or add extra insulation if it looks in disrepair. Your attic should have vents throughout to allow for good airflow.

Remove Overhanging Branches from Nearby Trees

If your house is surrounded by trees or has trees nearby, make sure that any branches overhanging your roof have been removed. During fall, the leaves from the branches may start falling off to the roof and accumulates, causing damages to the gutters and the roof itself.

Get a Professional Roof Inspection

Call for a roofing professional to inspect your roof for any roof damage like cracked, frayed, curled and missing shingles. Roofing companies in New England have the appropriate tools and expertise to do the assessment and if required, repair or replace your roof.

These steps will also ensure you that your roof is ready for the harsh weather conditions during fall and winter seasons. Your roof protects your MOST IMPORTANT asset. Give yourself and your family the peace of mind, knowing that your roof is in good condition and will provide you and your loved ones comfort and protection throughout the rough New England fall and winter seasons.
